The Colloque Franco-Britannique

The Colloque began in 1963 as a "Congregational - French Reformed Consultation" for ministers on the subject of "Le pasteur et le monde". At some later point the word Colloque was first applied, perhaps in 1973 by which time there was a considerable proportion of lay participants. having lunch together
Jan-Albert Roetman and Jean-Arnold de Clermont Nowadays membership is not exclusively drawn from the United Reformed Church nor the Eglise Réformée, although it does draw people mainly from northern France (the Littoral) and from southern England.
Over the years there have several organisers/animateurs. They include, on the British side, Glynmor John (1963-70), Caryl Micklem (1971-81), Donald Schofield (1982-98) and Stephen Taylor (from 1998). On the French side they were Ennio Floris, Jacques Chauvin, Pierre Durand, Serge Oberkampf, Gilbert Baume, Martial Lapicida, François Clavairoly and Jan-Albert Roetman.
One of the stated aims of the Colloque is the promotion of better understanding between Christians in France and in the United Kingdom. So for the 2003 Colloque, the chosen theme was The Prophetic Voice - exploring the role of Christians in today's society. How do we view society and the way it is developng at the begining of this millenium? How should the Churches' voice be heard in today's world, and what should the Churches say to the world? Can we even think in terms of a global society, and what are the big issues facing the world? Our thoughts were led by Jean-Arnold de Clermont, formerly Président of the Nord-Normandie Synode, then Président of the Fédération Protestante de France, and now Président of the Conference of European Churches; by Andrew Bradstock, Secretary of the URC's Church & Society Department; and by Robert Mollet, Secrétaire-général de la fédération de l'Entraide protestante.
Recent Colloques have taken a wide range of topics. For example, Living Together in a multi-faith society (Oxford, 1990), War and Peace in the Aftermath of the Gulf War (Rouen, 1991), Welcoming the Stranger (Lille, 1997), and Sharing the Faith in the new century (Bromley, 2000).
The 2004 Colloque was held in Edinburgh. The 2005 Colloque was held in Rouen over the weekend of 8-11 July, with the topic "Justice".
